1. Recycle Nutrients Already Available on Your Farm
Don’t waste your waste! Crop residues (stems, leaves, husks), livestock manure, and residues from biogas production contain valuable plant nutrients that can be returned to the soil — either directly or through composting. Too often, these materials are treated as waste instead of what they really are: valuable fertilizer resources.
Closing nutrient cycles on the farm can:
- reduce fertilizer costs,
- improve soil fertility,
- increase organic matter,
- and strengthen long-term productivity.
On many farms, recycled nutrients can become the foundation of a more self-reliant farming system.
2. Keep Nutrients Where They Belong: On Your Field
Every nutrient lost is money lost! Nutrients should feed your crops — not rivers, groundwater, or the atmosphere. Preventing nutrient losses is one of the cheapest and most effective ways to improve farm efficiency.
- Prevent soil erosion
Most plant nutrients are stored in the topsoil. When soil is washed away by rain or blown away by wind, fertility disappears with it. Keep soils covered whenever possible through:- cover crops
- mulching
- pasture cover
- or crop residues
Bare soil is vulnerable soil!
- Reduce nitrogen leaching
Rainfall can wash nitrogen deep into the soil and into groundwater, where crops can no longer use it. Apply manure or fertilizer when crops are actively growing and able to absorb nutrients. This is especially important for liquid manure, slurry, or biogas digestate, which contain large amounts of soluble nitrogen.
- Reduce nitrogen losses to the air
Nitrogen can also evaporate from manure into the atmosphere.
Or simply put: Why fertilize your neighbour’s field instead of your own?
Whenever possible, incorporate manure into the soil shortly after spreading. Applying it during cooler periods — early morning, evening, or cloudy weather — can significantly reduce evaporation losses.
3. Produce Your Own Nitrogen
Nature already offers one of the world’s largest fertilizer reserves: the air!
Around 78% of the atmosphere consists of nitrogen. Certain plants, especially legumes, can capture this nitrogen and make it available for agriculture.
Legumes can:
- improve soil fertility
- reduce fertilizer dependency
- provide high-quality feed
- and support biodiversity
Integrate legumes into crop rotations and pasture mixtures whenever possible. Tree legumes such as Leucaena can also produce valuable biomass, while their leaves may be used as green manure.
4. More Resilient Farming Starts with Better Nutrient Cycles
Global fertilizer markets may remain unstable for years to come. Farms that rely more on local nutrient cycles and biological processes will be better prepared for future shocks.
Sometimes, the smartest innovation is simply making better use of what we already have:
- healthier soils
- better recycling
- more diverse farming systems
- and less waste
Because every nutrient recycled is fertilizer saved — and money saved!
